What Causes Black Streaks on Your Roof (and How to Remove Them)

Those dark streaks running down your roof aren’t dirt, soot or water stains — they’re a blue-green algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and thrives in the Pacific Northwest’s damp, shaded climate. What those black streaks actually are

The streaks are colonies of Gloeocapsa magma, a hardy algae that travels by air and lands on rooftops across the Portland metro. It protects itself with a dark, pigmented sheath, and that pigment is what you see as black or brown staining. Because the algae spreads downward with rainwater, the streaks almost always run from the ridge toward the gutters, widening as they go.

You’ll notice them most on the north- and west-facing slopes of your roof. Those sides get the least direct sun, stay damp longest after our frequent rain, and give the algae the shaded, moist environment it needs to spread.

Black streaks vs. moss: how to tell the difference

It’s easy to lump all roof growth together, but the treatment differs. Algae shows up as flat, dark streaks that follow the water’s path down the slope. Moss is raised, green and spongy, and tends to clump along shingle edges and in the valleys where debris collects. Lichen looks like crusty, pale patches bonded tightly to the shingle. Most PNW roofs eventually get a mix of all three, which is why a single soft-wash visit that treats everything at once is the most efficient fix.

Why Portland-area roofs are so prone to it

The Pacific Northwest is close to ideal habitat for roof algae. A few local conditions make streaking worse here than in drier parts of the country:

• Constant moisture. Months of drizzle and heavy tree-canopy shade keep shingles damp long after the rain stops.
• Mild temperatures. Our winters rarely get cold enough, and our summers rarely hot enough, to kill the algae off.
• Heavy tree cover. Firs, maples and cedars drop debris and block sunlight, feeding algae and moss alike.
• North-facing slopes. Any roof plane that stays shaded will stain first and clear last.

Are black streaks actually damaging my roof?

They’re more than a cosmetic problem. As the algae spreads it holds moisture against the shingle surface and slowly eats away the limestone granules that shield the asphalt from UV. Over several years that shortens shingle life, and the dark staining absorbs extra heat, which can nudge up your summer cooling bills. The streaks also pull down curb appeal quickly, something worth fixing before you sell, refinance or list photos online. Catching the problem early is far cheaper than replacing shingles that algae has already degraded.

Should you clean them yourself?

We don’t recommend it. Pressure washing a roof, the instinct most homeowners have, strips the protective granules, voids many shingle warranties and is genuinely dangerous on a wet, mossy PNW roofline. Bleach poured from a ladder streaks unevenly, kills the landscaping below and rarely reaches the algae’s roots, so the stains creep back within a season.
